Doomsday trailer released

Teamwork: still essential.

Update 12/12/2017: The Doomsday Heist update has now been released.

Update 12/11/2017: Jetpack has now been named the “Mammoth Thruster personal jetpack.”

Original article:

On Tuesday, after previously stating it was unlikely that more heists would be made, Rockstar Games released a trailer announcing the next update coming to Grand Theft Auto Online – the Doomsday Heist. The heist is only the second published to-date that allows for a minimum of two players to start it up, with most requiring four players, and is the first to let either 2, 3, or 4 players take part.

A billionaire tech mogul, an idealistic intelligence agent, a socially awkward conspiracy theorist and a neurotic supercomputer have been forced into an unlikely alliance to save San Andreas from total annihilation. As apocalyptic threats mount from enemies unknown, you and your criminal crew are enlisted to un-tangle mysteries and eradicate threats spanning from the bustling streets of downtown Los Santos to the ocean floor and all the way to the inner depths of Mount Chiliad in an epic new online adventure.

The Doomsday Heist is coming to Grand Theft Auto Online on December 12th.

-Rockstar Games newswire release

After the trailer announcement, the Grand Theft Auto community poured over the footage released, picking apart its details. The trailer, which is 1:01 long, sets up the heist and the unlikely alliance that has been formed to save San Andreas from “total annihilation” by an unknown enemy. The trailer also showcases a brand new ballistic missile launcher, possible new police van, drones, a jetpack, full-sized submarine, missile silos (and missiles), what looks like an interior of a UFO, teases the inside of Mount Chiliad, and a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) propeller-driven plane – complete with a modelled interior.

Into Chiliad and beyond

One thing that Rockstar has confirmed is that this update will see players gaining the ability to go inside of Mount Chiliad.1 Although, it is currently unclear in what fashion or to what extent. It was also revealed that at least some portion of the heist would take place on the ocean floor. One of the last frames of the trailer also teased the possible addition of the highly sought after jetpack.

Flying cars, tanks, and more

On Twitter, Rockstar has been periodically teasing information about the update as well. From their Tweets and the trailer, it has been confirmed that the update will contain the Stromburg, a car that can make itself at home in the sea – without the usual issues that arise when attempting to drive into the ocean in a terrestrial vehicle. The DELUXO is another vehicle that will be coming in the update. According to a GIF uploaded on Twitter by Rockstar, it will be capable of flying (possibly in a similar fashion to the rocket-powered motorbike, the oppressor).

Khanjali can be upgraded with a Rail Gun cannon.

The development giant also teased a brand new tank on Saturday, the Khanjali, which is no ordinary tank. It has the option to upgrade its turret to a Rail Gun cannon – although it is currently unclear what the cost will be of that upgrade. A transport helicopter called the Akula was also announced. The Akula has the ability to transfer up to 4 players and is armed with a passenger-operated .50 caliber turret, rear seat thermal and night vision cameras. In the Tweet it was also mentioned that the Akula also has a stealth mode, allowing it to operate off the grid. At this point, it is unclear how that will be implemented – we may just have to wait until Rockstar either releases more information or until the update is released this Tuesday.

Avon Hertz: tech mogul and billionaire by the time he was 21 and 3/4.

Avon Hertz is a name that Rockstar has also gone out of its way to tell players on Twitter. He is the “billionaire tech mogul” who, according to Rockstar in a Tweet, made his fortune “by the time he was 21 and 3/4”. Whether or not the “3/4” is significant or just extra detail that someone at Rockstar thought would be fun to add in is still unclear at this time. To date, the last thing that Rockstar has teased is the Volatol bomber – a brand new plane that appears to have the shape not that dissimilar to real-life stealth aircraft.

It is not certain whether the vehicles will be available in free mode, limited to heists, or if it will be a mix, but what we do know is that this will be an update worth looking forward to. We will find out the entirety of what the update has to offer, come its December 12th release. Until then, I wish you sweet dreams of jetpacks.
