Comando Sombra Gang Information:
- 3,000 Members Strong
- Drug Trafficking, Kidnapping, Extortion, Torture, Robbery, Murder, Hijacking are their known activities.
- Formed in the mid-1990s, splinter group of a prison gang. Still has a strong prison presence.
- Major distributor of cocaine and marijuana throughout São Paulo state.
- Linked to over 20 high-profile kidnappings in the past three years.
- Activity has shifted toward contract killing in recent months, including judges and politicians.
- Heavily armed - AK47, M500 Shotgun, M10, Double Barrel Shotgun
- Characterized by their use of extreme force, violent retaliation and coordinated attacks on police.
- Believed to be responsible for the deaths of more than 450 police officers since 2005.
- Gang members use radical rhetoric as a tool to gain support and promote ant-establishment sentiment in poor communities.
- Highly organized. Networked throughout many of the largest favelas in São Paulo, including Morro do Abutre, Vila do Beija-flor, Nova Esperança and Purgatópolis.
- Engaged in vicious turf wars with local favela gangs, such as Tropa Z in Nova Esperança.
Serrano - Commando Sombra Gang Leader Information:
- Leader of São Paulo’s Comando Sombra gang since 2006.
- Known as "Serrano". Believed to be a reference to the Serra da Mantiqueira, where he spent his early childhood.
- Born to African immigrant parents, who both died by the time he was 8 or 9 years old.
- By 11, he was living on the streets of São Paulo working as a pickpocket and spotter for drug dealers.
- Linked to his first murder at 12 years old.
- First became involved with the Comando Sombra in the late 1990s.
- Attributed with transforming the CS from fractious small-time street gang to a highly-organized city-wide criminal organization.
- Under his leadership, the CS began actively targeting law enforcement officials. Coordinated a series of riots across São Paulo in June 2009, including attacks on police stations and state buildings.
- Reclusive, disciplined and well-guarded. Targeted in 4 UFE operations since 2009 but avoided arrest. Last known hideout in the Nova Esperança favela.
